Some key points to consider including in your email:
- That you are a parent of a child or children in the public education system
- There is considerable evidence from other parts of Canada and the world that kids can return safely to school even as the pandemic is ongoing
- Kids need school: it’s key to their intellectual, social and emotional health. Education is a human right.
- The lack of a plan to have kids in school is making it impossible for parents to plan for the fall, and many are considering the real possibility that one parent may need to leave their job
- If schools can’t fully re-open, the at-home learning plan needs to better address the needs of students and parents than what was offered March-June.
- Parents are not teachers. And we can’t do our jobs while we’re trying to help with homeschool and take care of small children.
- Parents feel left behind, seeing how other sectors like tourism and hospitality are prioritized for re-opening. Education is a priority for all of this province’s parents. It should be the government’s priority as well.
- Parents need information now; the end of July is too late for communicating with us on the plan for the school year.
